About Thomas E. Starzl
Thomas E. Starzl (1926-2017) performed the first human liver transplantation in 1967 and has often been described as the “Father of Transplantation”. He was responsible for innumerable breakthroughs in transplant surgery, immunology, immunosuppression and transplant medicine. He was the recipient of more than 200 awards (including the 2004 National Medal of Science) and membership of 60 professional societies. You can read more about him here:

About the Thomas E. Starzl Prize
The Thomas Starzl Prize is awarded to the best case report published in the previous year as voted by the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Surgery (IJS) and IJS Case Reports. A shortlist is drawn up using download and citation data or through Editorial Board recommendations. The winner receives the prestige that comes with an international prize, £500 in Elsevier book vouchers and full fee waiver on their next case report (worth $995).
